Dunia kerja di era modern ini semakin mengalami perkembangan, dari buruh yang serba full time. Hingga anggota PNS atau pegawai negeri sipil yang hanya 8 jam/hari dalam setiap kerja sehari. Namun dengan posisi tawar komunitas buruh, buruh yang biasa kerja full time hingga 12 jam/hari kini bisa menikmati kesetaraan derajat, dengan hanya 8 jam kerja per-hari.

Namun istilah kerja full time yang sekerang bekerja hingga 8 jam/hari dalam 5 hari selama satu minggu itu tidak lagi menjadi populer di kalangan negara maju. Sebab, dengan bekerja secara freelance mereka dapat bekerja hanya dengan 5 jam per-hari tanpa harus datang ke kantor mereka bekerja. Freelance berasal dari bahasa inggris yang berarti pekerja lepas. Artinya, pekerja/karyawan yang saat bekerja mengerjakan tugasnya tidak mesti harus datang ke kantor untuk bekerja, namun dapat dilakukan di rumah. Hanya pada saat-saat tertentu saja, karyawan akan datang ke kantor untuk menghadiri meeting, rapat kerja bidang perencanaan/keadaan darurat, atau juga dalam hal penting lainnya, atau bahkan selama kontrak berlangsung tanpa ada tatap muka secara langsung, hanya melalui media internet. Di dunia kerja yang terjadi di Indonesia baru-baru ini banyak dilakukan perusahaan, bahkan wirausahawan muda yang telah menggunakan praktik perekrutan pekerja secara freelance.

Kemudahan teknologi itulah yang menyebabkan pola budaya, dan pola berpikir manusia terpengaruh. Namun, perlu diketahui juga bahwa hal tersebut memiliki kelemahan. Apa saja kelemahannya? Ya, mungkin potensi untuk terjadi kesalah-pahaman bisa terjadi antara pekerja dan bos-nya.

Lalu bagaimana dengan status pekerja jika dia bekerja secara part-time, dilihat dari segi waktunya yang berarti paruh waktu. Jika kita menganggap kerja full time adalah 8 jam perhari dan selama 5 hari untuk satu minggu. Maka kerja dengan sistem part-time hanya 8 jam/hari selama 2 hari dalam satu minggu. Namun berbeda dengan freelance, sistem kerja paruh waktu harus datang ke kantor atau ke tempat kerja. Kita tidak diperkenankan untuk bekerja dari rumah, karena biasanya pekerja paruh waktu hanya menggantikan pekerja full time yang tidak bisa bekerja di hari-hari tertentu.

Lalu apa saja kriteria perbedaan yang lain antara pekerja freelance dengan pekerja part-time?
  1. Freelance biasanya membutuhkan keahlian khusus, seperti ahli bidang IT (Informasi Teknologi), Fotografer, Public Relation, Riset and Development, dan lain sebagainya.
  2. Sementara part-time biasanya untuk mengganti pekerja utama yang sedang cuti, hari libur, atau hari sibuk, seperti pekerja waitress (pramusaji) di restoran, atau tim sukses suatu perusahaan. 
  3. Gaji pekerja freelance biasanya ditransfer melalui nomer rekening Bank
  4. Sementara gaji pekerja part-time biasanya melalui amplop
  5. Freelance akan dikejar oleh target dan deadline suatu tugas yang harus ditempuh oleh pekerja
  6. Sementara pekerja part-time tidak dikejar deadline
  7. Pekerja freelance biasanya lebih kecil gajinya daripada gaji pekerja yang full time
  8. Sementara pekerja part-time jika dikalkulasi perharian, maka lebih besar dari pekerja full time
